Thomson Reuters buy CaseLogistix from Anacomp

Thomson Reuters today announced that it has acquired document review software CaseLogistix from Anacomp Inc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

CaseLogistix provides document review, data ingestion and production tools to help litigation teams manage the electronic discovery review process. The acquisition is described by Thomson Reuters as a critical next step in furthering its litigation strategy as CaseLogistix expands the Westlaw Litigator set of integrated tools, services and content. CaseLogistix and its employees will be aligned with the litigation business within Thomson Reuters Legal under the direction of Allison Guidette, VP & general manager of Litigation.

Top stories this time include the results of a survey conducted by Smart WebParts into lawyer time recording practices. The findings include...

• The average leakage (lawyers and other time keepers failing to report all billable time) ranges from $20,000 to $40,000 per person, per year.
• The overhead cost of keeping time is heavy, with a mean 3.1 hours per month per individual devoted to filling out timesheets. As the mean billing rate of respondents was $438 per hour, this indicates an imputed cost of $16,294 per person, per year.
• 60% if respondents reported reconstructive time keeping practice, entering their time at the end of the day or days later by looking at emails, phone logs and appointments – only 38% said they enter time contemporaneously.
• Only 54% said they prepared timesheets daily – 21% said they did it between once and twice a month.
• As for accuracy? Nearly half (47%) of all respondents said their timesheets are “accurate over time, it all evens out.”

Here's an interesting story CPA Global (best know in the law firms world for its LPO/legal process outsourcing services) issues yesterday. While it primarily relates to other services, over and beyond conventional legal process outsourcing (and, it should be noted, does not involve either CPA Global or its customers) it does raise the risk-related issue of what can happen when your outsourcer becomes the subject of litigation that could place in jeopardy the services you have outsourced to them? And, it also echoes another concern associated with Cloud-based services, namely what happens to your data if the SaaS operator's servers are seized/closed down for legal reasons.

The interesting dimension here is that WhitServe is not only taking legal action against the service providers who are alleged to have infringed their patents but also against their customers. In a worse-case scenario presumably you could not only lose your data but also suffer the added indignity of being sued for the privilege?



Open Letter to Clients - July 2010

WhitServe patent infringement suits
In the wake of increasing publicity and market comment about the patent infringement law suits that have been filed by WhitServe LLC against another IP management services provider and several of their clients, I am writing to reassure you that there is no danger of your organisation becoming involved in similar legal action with regard to your use of CPA Global's products and services.

CPA Global has held a worldwide licence covering all WhitServe's relevant patents since August 2006.

As you may have read, on 25 May 2010, WhitServe, which owns several patents relating to the delivery of professional services over the internet, was awarded more than US$8 million in damages to be paid by the IP services provider in question. On 18 June 2010, WhitServe filed a similar suit for patent infringement against a number of that provider's clients.

WhitServe is seeking an injunction against those clients, as well as damages for losses suffered due to the alleged infringement of WhitServe's patent rights. WhitServe has stated its intention to pursue more of the provider's clients.

Tikit’s product roadmap for its eMarketing Suite v4.8 outlines the range of functionality that will be available early 2011 to complement LexisNexis’s InterAction CRM system.  

TheTikit eMarketing User Group meetings held in the USA and the UK encouraged clients to participate in interactive sessions providing a forum for them to make suggestions about the direction in which they would like to take the future development of the eMarketing Suite.   The result is an exciting product roadmap that offers ongoing innovation to provide clients with a comprehensive solution to their e-marketing requirements. This collaborative approach will form the basis of all future developments and roadmaps.

Comment: the benchmarking app will allow users to measure the success of their campaigns relative to other firms within the market. For example, if you are consistently getting a 3% response to an email marketing campaign compared with an industry average of (say) 9%. then this would be a pretty strong hint that you needed to rethink the design of your emarketing.

Interaction launch Strategic Account Mangement

LexisNexis has announced the global launch of InterAction Strategic Account Management, a new customer relationship management (CRM) application for professional services firms. Strategic Account Management equips multi-disciplinary client teams with tools that improve their performance across multiple offices and geographic locations. Businesses can now enhance knowledge sharing and better track, coordinate and align the activities of individual team members with broader account management and client satisfaction goals.

InterAction Strategic Account Management is the first application for professional service markets to integrate a CRM solution built on the Microsoft.NET framework, providing compatibility with Microsoft SharePoint. This platform facilitates information sharing across multiple software programs, making content and insights from the InterAction CRM database and the Strategic Account Management application seamlessly accessible on SharePoint portals and dashboards.
